Which occupations in Newfoundland and Labrador do not require an LMIA
The Atlantic province has published a list of in-demand professions that are easier to immigrate into
Newfoundland and Labrador has introduced new measures to make it easier for employers to hire foreign nationals, which will address the province's labour shortage through the Atlantic Immigration Program.
The province has published a list of occupations not eligible for provincial labour market testing.
These processes include vacancy assessments. Similar to the labour market impact assessment (LMIA), the vacancy assessment proves that the employer has exhausted all available options for recruiting a suitable candidate from the local labour market before inviting an immigration candidate to fill the vacancy.
Applicants must have a job offer in an in-demand profession to take advantage of the benefits. Three sectors are in-demand occupations in the province: health care, information and communication technology (ICT) and aquaculture.
In-demand occupations in the health care sector:
- family physician;
- specialist physicians: psychiatrist, pathologist, internist, radiologist, obstetrician-gynecologist, anesthesiologist, pediatric intensive care physician, neonatologist, hematology pathologist;
- practicing nurse;
- licensed practical nurse;
- Patient Care Assistant;
- clinical psychologist;
- medical physicist;
- radiation medicine technologists: radiation therapist, dosimetrist.
In-demand occupations in the ICT sector:
- programmers and developers of interactive systems: software developer, Python programmer, web developer, NET developer;
- biomedical engineer;
- UI/UX developer;
- electrical engineer;
- Artificial Intelligence Designer;
- mechanical engineer;
- infrastructure engineer;
- security specialist;
- cloud specialist;
- bioinformatician;
- computer network maintenance technician;
- scientific assistant;
- data analyst;
- marine technician;
- operator of teleoperated unmanned underwater vehicles (TNPA);
- Ocean mapping specialist;
- technical writer.
In-demand professions in the aquaculture sector:
- captain (FM4 certification required);
- Aquaculture managers: rearing and feeding manager, site manager (with knowledge of water quality expertise), regional manager;
- technician;
- assistant manager;
- cage technician.
