There will be a dark sky festival in Alberta

This week kicks off a unique two-week celebration of space and science.

From October 13 to 29, 2023, Jasper National Park in Alberta's Canadian Rockies will host the annual Dark Sky Festival. It's a two-week celebration that draws space and science fans from around the world.

Why here?

Jasper is a small town in one of Canada's most scenic provinces, Alberta. The nearby national park of the same name is one of 17 reserves in the country ideal for stargazing. The Jasper Dark Sky Reserve is the largest in Canada and the second largest in the world, second only to the Great Big Bend, located in the United States and Mexico.

What to see?

First of all, of course, a picture of the starry sky devoid of light pollution. The park has all the necessary equipment for this purpose. However, eyewitnesses claim that even with the naked eye you can see an extraordinary amount. The spectacle is truly mesmerizing!

In addition to the sky itself, the festival organizers offer a full program: with the performance of musical groups, guest lecturers, competitions and gastronomic delights.

Especially sophisticated visitors can enjoy a photo hunt for the northern lights under the guidance of an instructor, a helicopter cruise, yoga under the stars and a drone show. Of course, many events will take place in the local planetarium, where seminars by astronomy experts and theatrical performances are expected.

Canada, after all

First and foremost, Jasper is a nature reserve and therefore visitors can spend time exploring and contemplating the scenic landscapes, photo hunting and hiking.

Canada pays a lot of attention to its history, so everyone will be able to experience the culture of the indigenous peoples of the area. The talks will take place in a cozy atmosphere around fireplaces and campfires.

Some of the events will cost more than one hundred Canadian dollars, and some are absolutely free. Guests with almost any income can arrange a rich program for themselves — there is only a desire.
