You've probably heard or read that Canada has a strong economy and is also the new Mecca for startups. Did you know that 63 of the richest people in the world live in Canada? We rounded up the top insanely rich Canadians and found out how they made their billions.
1. Sherry Brydson
Fortune according to Bloomberg: CAD 19.3 billion (USD 14.5 billion).
The richest person in Canada and one of the wealthiest women in the world is Sherry Brydson. She is among the heirs of the Thomson family, a clan of Canadian media tycoons. In 1934, their great-grandfather founded his first newspaper in Canada. Since then they have owned many Canadian and British media, as well as investor companies.
Sherry not only owns 23% of the clan's assets, but is also an active entrepreneur. She owns a Thai restaurant, a spa, and her own investment company, Westerkirk Capital.
Sherry usually remains in the shadows, and Canadians themselves know little about her. However, she is known to support Canadian artists, invest millions of dollars in local museums, advocate for the preservation of indigenous culture, and build shelters for women who have been subjected to domestic violence.
