Canada's population grew by 1 million people

Canada

What caused unprecedented growth and what is the role immigration play?

As of January 1, 2023, Canada has a population of over 39.5 million people. This means that in a year the number of Canadians increased by 1 million people.

This is the fastest population growth since 1957. The reason for that back 66 years ago was the boom after World War II. If today population growth continues at the same rate, the number of Canadians will double in 26 years.

More than 600,000 people became temporary residents in Canada, and approximately 437,000 were admitted to Canada as immigrants. The number of study permit, work permit and asylym status appeared to be growing in all the provences and all the territories across Canada.

Never before has Canada seen so many people come to Canada in single year, and never before has Canada sought to process applications so quickly: for refugee status, immigration, student visas and other programs.

A naturally aging population and a low birth rate are the reasons why  Canadian government encourages migration. Canadian government intends to increase immigration over the next three years, so that in 2025 the average number will reach 500,000 newcomers per year.

Three groups that formed last year's immigration are permanent residents, foreign students, and skilled foreign workers.

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Canada welcomed more than 437,000 residents from 190 countries in 2022. More than half of them came to Canada through economic migration programs.

There are 551,405 people from 184 countries coming to Canada to study. Top countries bringigng students in Canada:

  1. India (226,450)
  2. China (52,165)
  3. Philippines (23,380)
  4. France (16,725)

  7. South Korea (11,535)
  8. Japan (10,955)
  9. Mexico (10,405)
