New Canadian record for the number of international students
Last year, students from all over the world chose Canada for their education.
According to new data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the country welcomed a record number of international students in 2022 — 551,405 people from 184 countries.
Another record last year was the total number of international students who were in Canada with a study permit. Their number exceeded 807,700. And the number of study permits issued is only increasing.
By comparison, in 2019 there were 637,800 foreigners studying in Canada. In 2020, the number of students decreased because of the pandemic, but in 2021 their number was almost back to normal at 617,300, which is still significantly lower than in 2022.
If you look at the statistics of international students by province, the picture in 2022 was as follows:
- Ontario — 411,000 students;
- British Columbia — 164,000 students;
- Quebec — 93,000 students;
- Alberta — 43,000 students;
- Manitoba — 22,000 students;
- Nova Scotia — 20,850 students;
- Saskatchewan — 13,135 students;
- New Brunswick — 11,140 students;
- Newfoundland and Labrador — 6,175 students;
- Prince Edward Island — 4,485 students.
The main countries from which international students came to Canada:
- India — 226,450 people;
- China — 52,165 people;
- Philippines — 23,380 people;
- France — 16,725 people;
- Nigeria — 16,195 people;
- Iran — 13,525 people;
- South Korea — 11,535 people;
- Japan — 10,955 people;
- Mexico — 10,405 people;
- Brazil — 10,405 people.
Canada is one of the best countries for students. Graduates of Canadian universities and colleges get a work permit and have more opportunities to get permanent residency than other candidates.
