Quebec does not want more immigrants
2022 was a record number of new arrivals. According to studies, the percentage of immigrants must match the percentage of people living in the provinces.
Last year, 437,000 permanent residents settled in Canada. In 2022, 68,820 immigrants came to Quebec, 15.7% of the total. But the population of the province compared to the whole territory is 23%. Ontario has 38% of the total population, but 42% of newcomers settled there last year. In British Columbia, it is almost 15%, which is 61,000 people. The numbers are similar to Quebec City, but it has 3.5 million fewer newcomers.
The Quebec government states that they are not seeking to admit more immigrants. This number of invitations for the year 2022 is quite acceptable. A large number of immigrants could lead to the destruction of the language and the identity of the province.
The increasing migration flows announced by the federal government are also a concern for the authorities. Therefore, the provinces must develop their own thresholds for the number of new residents.
Quebec, like other provinces, has a labour shortage that can only be filled by immigration.
Quebec is a French-speaking province, and it tries its best to remain so. And also to preserve its special culture and mentality. Despite this, Justin Trudeau said that the number of new arrivals could increase without harming the French language.
Minister of Immigration, refugees and citizenship Sean Fraser said there will be changes to Express Entry in the spring that will help reduce the burden on the health care system and reduce rising housing costs in certain cities. The new rules will deal with the distribution of migrants by region.
