Canada welcomed a record number of immigrants in 2022
Immigration goals were exceeded.
The Government of Canada has shared the country's successes. In 2022, a record was once again set for the number of permanent residency permits issued.
In 2022, the immigration target was 431,645 people. However, the plan was exceeded and Canada welcomed 437,000 new permanent residents. The situation was similar to the year before when Canada exceeded the immigration target for 2021. The 437,000 is the all-time record for the number of immigrants in a year in Canadian history.
In total, the country processed 5.2 million applications for permanent residency, temporary residence, and Canadian citizenship in 2022. This is twice as many as in 2021. So the records are not limited to the issuance of permanent residency.
To further accelerate application processing and meet immigration goals, Canada will adopt new technology, simplify processing and move most processes to an online format.
Canada still sees immigration as a key way to combat the huge labour shortage. Also, immigration accounts for about 75% of the country's population growth. By 2036, 30% of the population is projected to be immigrants.
The Canadian government's future goals are even more ambitious. In 2023, the country intends to take in 465,000 new permanent residents, thus setting another record.
