Canadian province launches new immigration program
It will be for low-skilled workers.
On Nov. 25, the province of Saskatchewan announced the launch of a new pilot immigration program for workers who are in short supply in the province.
The pilot targets unskilled occupations that can be trained on-the-job. Sectors with the highest demand for labor are health care, manufacturing, agriculture, agricultural engineering, construction, hospitality and retail trade.
"The demand for labour in our province is high and will only increase," commented Saskatchewan Minister of Immigration and Training Jeremy Harrison.
Requirements for the new pilot include:
- a full-time job offer in Saskatchewan;
- 1 year of work experience outside of Saskatchewan or 6 months in Saskatchewan in the same profession.
It is expected that there will also be educational requirements and English or French language proficiency, but exact information is not yet available.
Under the pilot program, employers in the province will have to apply to participate in order to be eligible to hire applicants seeking to immigrate to Saskatchewan. They will also be required to provide workers with support once they move to the province. Details are not known at this time.
