New work permit for those immigrating to Quebec
The province will allow some candidates to work without restrictions.
Quebec will issue an open work permit to temporary foreign employees who have applied for permanent residence in the province. The new regulation came into force on August 31.
When a candidate comes to Canada on a work visa, they are only allowed to work for one employer until they gain permanent residency. Now, Quebec workers will be able, without having to wait, to obtain a new permit that allows them to work for any company.
Candidates who meet the following requirements can obtain an open work permit:
- live in Quebec and have a work permit, including if it has expired;
- apply to the Quebec program for skilled professionals and obtain a Quebec Certificate of Selection;
- submit your immigration papers to the federal government and be notified that your application has been accepted for processing.
The spouse or partner of the principal applicant may also receive a work permit if the applicant has applied for the whole family at once.
You can apply for an open work permit on the official website of the Government of Canada.
