How much money does a student who goes to study in Quebec need?

Updated provincial financial requirements.

On December 7, 2023, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced an increase in financial requirements for applicants seeking study permits. The new requirements take effect January 1, 2024, but the general federal requirements apply to all but one of Canada's provinces and territories. Quebec has set its own rules for students.

To study in Quebec, you must demonstrate your financial ability to cover the following expenses:

  • tuition - the amount charged by your institution for enrolling in your program of study;
  • transportation costs — the amount needed to travel back and forth from your country;
  • settlement fee — CA$ 500;
  • health insurance costs — the amount for the entire period of stay in Quebec for you and all accompanying family members (proof of this amount is replaced by valid insurance or information that your country of origin has a social security agreement with Quebec);
  • living expenses — funds that cover the costs of daily living in Quebec.

For the period January 1 through December 31, 2024, the following rates apply to lodging expenses:

1 student under the age of 18 CA$ 7,541
1 student 18 years of age or older

CA$ 15,078

2 persons (student and adult family member) CA$ 22,115
2 adults (student and family member) and 1 minor family member CA$ 24,773
2 adults (student and family member) and 2 minor family members CA$ 26,737

To demonstrate your financial ability, you need to provide documentary proof that you are able to cover all of these expenses.
