Changes to Quebec's immigration law have come into effect

Changes to Quebec

You can't go anywhere without French nowadays.

On November 23, a bylaw amending the Quebec Immigration Regulations came into effect. Economic immigration programs were improved to address workforce issues, support economic development and strengthen the vitality of the French language in Quebec.

Knowledge of French will now be mandatory for those who wish to qualify for all economic immigration programs.

The call for applications for three targeted pilot programs has also started. Each of them can be applied for between November 23, 2023 and December 31, 2024:

  1. Pilot program for food processing workers . In total, a maximum of 600 applications will be considered from candidates who have experience in Quebec in this field and are currently employed in a suitable position.
  2. Pilot program for orderlies. The conditions are similar — no more than 600 applications from applicants with experience as a sanitation worker in the province and employed at the time the application is sent.
  3. Artificial intelligence, information technology and visual effects pilot program. It will invite up to 700 people: 200 in the artificial intelligence sector and 500 in the information technology and visual effects sector.

What's going to change later?

Effective November 23, 2024, the Québec Experience Program — Graduate Component will apply the requirement to complete suitable Quebec study programs exclusively in French.

As of November 29, 2024, the Regular Skilled Worker Program will cease to exist in its current form and will be replaced by a revamped Qualified Worker Selection Program.
