Canada's new immigration minister

Canada

In a cabinet shakeup, Justin Trudeau has appointed a new immigration minister.

Earlier this week we reported that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is planning cabinet changes on Wednesday. And one of the many changes already underway is a change in the immigration minister. Sean Fraser, who has served in that position since 2021, has been assigned as minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities. And he will be replaced as Minister for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship by Marc Miller.

Miller has served as Minister of Indigenous Relations since the fall of 2021. He is 50 years old. He was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. Miller served in the Canadian Army and was an infantry commander. He is a graduate of McGill University, where he earned a degree in common and civil law. Marc attended university at the same time as the current Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and is considered "one of his longtime friends". At the University of Montreal, Miller earned bachelor's and master's degrees in political science. After graduation, he was a practicing lawyer.

Miller began his journey into big politics in 2013 when he became an adviser to Trudeau during the future prime minister's election campaign and dealt with financial issues. In 2015, he was elected to represent a Montreal constituency in the House of Commons and later became the leader of the Liberal Party caucus in the province of Quebec.

Throughout his political career, Miller has been a strong advocate for increased federal investment in affordable housing, public transportation, and child benefits.

In 2017, Miller was promoted to Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. In August 2018, he was promoted to Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous Relations, and in 2021, Miller became Minister of Indigenous Relations.
