The amount will not be taxable.

This week, residents of Ontario can receive a CAIP payment outside of their income tax returns for the first time.

CAIP is a tax-free amount paid to individuals and families to offset the cost of federal pollution prices. Previously, residents had to request these funds separately by filing a return and receiving the payment once a year. Beginning in July 2022, the government decided to switch to quarterly payments.

Those who are residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba or Ontario as of the first day of the pay month and the last day of the preceding month can qualify for CAIP. The following conditions must also be met during this period:

  • age 19 or older;

  • the presence (at the time) of a spouse or civil partner;

  • living together with a child (up to 19 years old).

The payment consists of a basic amount and a 10% surcharge for residents of small and rural areas. It also depends on the recipient's marital status and the province in which he or she lives.

Thus, the annual amount of CAIP in Ontario is:

  • $373  per person;

  • $186 for a spouse or common-law partner;

  • $93 for a child under 19 years of age;

  • $186 for the first child in a single-parent family.

There is no need to write a separate request for payment: after the 2021 income tax and benefit return is processed and if the resident is eligible, the first payment will be made on July 15, 2022, and will include the amount for April 2022.

Starting next year, payments will come on April 15, July, October and January.
