Free tickets to Canada for Ukrainians, investments in medical licensing system and other news
We tell you about the main events of the past week.
Medicine
The Canadian federal government is trying to attract doctors and nurses from abroad. Currently there are 2.8 doctors and 10.4 nurses per 1,000 people in the country. You have to wait more than six months for specialists. Because of the inability to get help on time, the health care system has been frequently criticized of late. Perhaps in the foreseeable future, critics will get their way and Canada will abandon completely free medicine for citizens and permanent residents.
So far, the government has allocated $1.5 million CAD to integrate immigrant medics. The organization, which has been helping immigrant parents get health care for their children for three years, will spend the money on a comprehensive review of the medical education verification system.
It has been announced that the organization will develop a plan to remove barriers to immigrants working in health care in Canada and create an online platform where overseas professionals can find information. For now, to get a detailed plan on how to prove your medical or nursing degree, you will need to contact representatives of medical organizations or immigration counsellors.

Doctors in Canada are pushing to expand full vaccination against coronavirus to three doses, but so far the government is not going to force residents to take the mandatory third shot. 55.5% of Canadians aged 12 and older have already given three shots voluntarily.
Due to queues and delays at airports, random testing for travelers arriving in Canada has been temporarily suspended. It will resume July 1 and will be conducted off-airport. The Canadian government believes it's the only way to at least roughly know how many infected people are crossing the border. Other countries do not conduct such tests.
Supervision
Effective July 4, 2022, the term of supervisa, which allows parents and grandparents of citizens and permanent residents to live in Canada, changes. It will now be possible to remain in the country for five years without leaving the country. Those already in Canada will be able to extend their visa for two years. Another important change: for relatives arriving on supervisa, it will be possible to buy a health insurance policy not only from Canadian companies. The Department of Immigration promises to soon name foreign insurance companies that will be allowed to sell policies.
Restriction for students in Quebec
The province of Quebec no longer wants to be a "gateway to settlement in other provinces." On June 7, Immigration Canada announced that only graduates of publicly subsidized institutions of higher education will be able to obtain work permits after graduation in Quebec. The change will take effect Sept. 1, 2023.

The Province of Ontario now reports on them not immediately after they take place, so it wasn't until last week that information about the May shenanigans came out. On May 4, the province invited 57 members of in-demand professions already living and working in Ontario with a job offer. On May 26, 535 people who live in the province and work in certain occupations received invitations.
On June 7, targeted selection British Columbia. 125 technicians and 16 early childhood educators received invitations. Less than five health professionals were also invited.
On June 8, Immigration Canada selected nominees from the provinces to apply for permanent residency. 932 people received invitations.
FIFA World Cup
In 2026, Canada, along with the United States and Mexico, is going to host the FIFA World Cup. The host cities will be officially named on June 16, but it is already known that the capital of the province of Alberta has dropped out of the competition. Two Canadian cities remain on the list: Toronto, Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver's candidacy only began to be considered in April 2022. Prior to that, the provincial government thought that it was too expensive to host the Championships, but after the pandemic changed its mind and decided to bet on the influx of tourists. Vancouver is close to the American city of Seattle, which could also be chosen to host the matches. Vancouver's stadium is considered the best soccer stadium in Canada.
Tickets for Ukrainians
On April 20, 2022, the Department of Immigration launched a fundraiser and mileage drive to help Ukrainians get to Canada. On June 10, a nonprofit organization that helps refugees move around the world accepted the first 500 applications for free tickets from Europe to Canada. To apply, you had to have time to register on a special website on a certain day. Now these people are being vetted; if everything is in order, they will leave within four weeks. There will be a surcharge for pets, but tickets and transfers within Canada are free.
As soon as 500 tickets have been distributed, the date of the next round will be announced. In order not to miss that day, you can register on the organization's website in advance, and then you will be notified by e-mail.
A total of 10,000 people are going to be brought to Canada for free under this program. The only condition is that all family members must obtain a Canadian visa under the Canada-Ukraine Emergency Entry Permit.
