It will soon become easier to confirm a doctor

The Canadian government is allocating $1.5 million CAD to integrate immigrant medics.

In 2019, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario established Newcomer Navigator to make sure that social workers and others helping new immigrants navigate Canada better explain to parents how they can access health care for their children.

Three years later, the Canadian government decided to allocate $1.5 million CAD to facilitate collaboration among different organizations in the health care sector and their exchange of information on the requirements for recognition of qualifications of health care professionals educated outside Canada.

The Newcomer Navigator organization is now charged with:

  • Identify the barriers that foreign-educated health professionals face in having their foreign credentials recognized in Canada;
  • provide practical policy recommendations to address gaps in the sector;
  • to help foreign-educated health professionals get information about credentialing and qualifications more quickly;
  • remove barriers to immigrants working in Canada's health care system.

The Newcomer Navigator is promised to be a platform where internationally educated health professionals can find information about recognition of their credentials in all regions of Canada (except Quebec). This is really important because new opportunities for immigrant doctors are not announced, and many people simply did not know, for example, that during the pandemic foreigners were given a 30-day license to practice in public Canadian hospitals.

The Newcomer Navigator website already has free webinars in English on the various nuances of physician and nurse credentialing, but requires registration from the newcomer provider to access.
