Canada collects money and miles to transport Ukrainians from Europe

The federal government has announced a new charitable foundation and is urging Canadians to help.

On April 9, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised EU representatives that he would soon send charter flights to transport 30,000 Ukrainians who expressed a desire to move to Canada under the CUAET program. On April 20, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced the launch of a collection of money and miles to help Ukrainians fly to Canada. We are now talking about 10,000 people and their families.

Global News writes that these 10,000 Ukrainians, along with their families, are not among the people Trudeau promised to send planes to, but there are no official statements yet about when the planes will be sent and who they will take on board. As of April 12, 2022, the Department of Immigration had received 140,877 applications under the CUAET program and approved 46,417.

A new fund Ukraine2Canada will work together with the international non-profit organization Miles4Migrants, the Shapiro Foundation and Canada's largest airline Air Canada. The bonus program of Air Canada, which allows accumulating points and paying for the flight, is called Aeroplan and is in force since 1984. The company itself donated 100 million program points to Ukraine2Canada. The average cost of a point is 2 Canadian cents.

Canadians can donate Aeroplan points on the Air Canada and Miles4Migrants websites or transfer cash to the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto, which will distribute the money to help Ukrainians. Those who donate more than $10 CAD are eligible for a tax credit.
