How international students can return to study in Canada
An important reminder for international students from Canadian immigration.
Canadian universities have been welcoming thousands of international students for decades. Studying in this country is considered highly prestigious, and professionals with Canadian diplomas are highly valued in any country of the world. However, with the introduction of the pandemic, entry into the country for international students has been severely hampered, so many young people have been forced to study online.
But things are slowly changing for the better, and Canada is once again waiting for students from abroad. As the fall 2021 semester approaches, Canada's Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) has prepared information for students who want to return or start their studies.
"At this time, the health and safety of Canadians and those who wish to study here remains our top priority. While many students will undoubtedly be happy to start or resume their studies in Canada, strict adherence to all public health measures remains critical," reminds IRCC.
Who can enter Canada to study
To be able to enter Canada as a student, you need to:
1. have a valid study permit or letter of recommendation confirming that you are approved to study.
2. Attend the specified institution with readiness plan for COVID-19, approved by the province or territory in which it is located.
3 It is also important to check if there are restrictions in your country that may affect your ability to travel. For example, the Canadian government has suspended flights from India until August 21, 2021.
Students must have a quarantine plan
Preparation plans for all institutions outline how they will manage the quarantine period for international students, including arrangements for transporting students to the quarantine site and providing food and medication.
When entering Canada, every international student must carry a 14-day quarantine plan in case they are found at the border to not meet all requirements full vaccinated travellers.

Who is considered a fully vaccinated traveler?
Those who are fully vaccinated may qualify for an exemption from some quarantine and testing requirements.
To be considered fully vaccinated, travellers must receive the full series of 2 COVID-19 vaccines or a combination of vaccines approved by the Government of Canada at least 14 days before entering Canada. These vaccines are currently produced by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson).
If you have gotten another vaccine, you are not currently considered fully vaccinated in Canada.
Travellers must provide proof of vaccination in English or French (or a certified translation of the document). Travellers can get the vaccine in any country, but it must be one of 4 vaccines approved by Health Canada.
To be eligible for benefits, fully vaccinated travellers must take a coronavirus test within 72 hours before leaving their country for Canada. They must also not have any symptoms of coronavirus infection.
They must provide all necessary information about their health status and vaccinations electronically to ArriveCAN within 72 hours before traveling to Canada. They need to bring a paper or digital copy of proof of vaccination and, as mentioned above, have a suitable plan to go through quarantine.
Upcoming changes in public health measures
From 9 August 2021, new measures will be introduced for travelers to Canada, including international students.
They include:
(1) Eliminate the 3-night quarantine hotel requirement for all airline passengers arriving after 00:01 Eastern United States Daylight Time (Toronto) on August 9, 2021.
2. Introduction of a randomized testing regime for fully vaccinated travellers who are eligible to enter Canada at selected airports and land border crossings. Unvaccinated travellers will continue to be subject to mandatory testing on arrival and on day 8.
3. those who have had COVID-19 and have recovered, but still test positive, can present their test done 14-180 days prior to arrival in the country.
Stay up to date
To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Government of Canada continues to actively monitor the situation and will not hesitate to take further security measures should the need arise.
International students wishing to come to Canada should continue to follow updates on the official IRCC website, to find out the latest developments. They must also follow the directions of their school or university and the province in which their institutions are located and follow any instructions from the local authorities when they arrive in Canada.
