A new series of commemorative coins from Canada

In 1988, the Royal Canadian Mint first introduced silver maple leaf (SML) coins to the world. Thirty-five years later the symbol of the Canadian nation looks as noble and pristine as ever. The style was changing from issue to issue, elements might have been renewed, rim ornament too, but the core, the Canadian maple, remained untouched.

Like recent issues devoted to folk symbols, these commemorative coins are marked by a more advanced three-dimensional design. The convexity allows for a detailed drawing on both the reverse and obverse sides. These coins are a special tribute to Canada and outstanding craftsmanship.

The Royal Canadian Mint has announced three new coins dedicated to the maple leaf. Each of them has a different denomination and is made of different metals, but all three coins were created by the same authors: the reverse with the image of a maple leaf was made by Walter Ott, Susanna Blunt was responsible for creating the obverse, the image of Queen Elizabeth II.

The new 2023 collectible coin is made from 1 ounce of 99.99% pure silver, achieving near-perfect brilliance. The SML is one of our most popular annual offerings and it tends to sell out quickly.

New for 2023, the yellow gold plating emphasizes the rim on both sides of the coin, as well as the image of Queen Elizabeth II and the maple leaf.

Look closely, and you'll notice rows of maple leaves with "35" (meaning commemorative year,) a pattern that repeats itself over and over again, though at first it's unnoticeable.

The reverse of your coin features a silver maple leaf by Walter Ott. The iconic symbol is adorned with a unique laser-engraved design, marking the 35th anniversary of the Canadian leaf of commemorative coins in 2023.

On the obverse is a special marking, including four pearls. They symbolize the four images that adorned the Canadian coins, and the date – the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Like its predecessor, this coin depicts Elizabeth II, who ruled Canada for a long 70 years. After her passing in September 2022, the Mint issued a series commemorating her posthumously.

Note that the coin is platinum plated on both sides. The image of Queen Elizabeth II is by Suzanne Blunt. The obverse bears a special marking indicating the reign of Elizabeth II.
