Nova Scotia's year in review: the most popular baby names
What the youngest Canadians were called in 2023.
Nova Scotia has summarized its own unique year in review. The province looked at what newborn babies were most often named in 2023 and it turns out that, according to the Nova Scotia’s Registry of Vital Statistics, the favorite name of new parents is Henry.
Other names in the top 10 were Theodore, Oliver, Jack, Noah, William, Owen, Liam, Jackson and Olivia. In the province, 35 Henry, 34 Theodore and 31 Oliver were born during the year, while the other names have already received less than 30 children each. The most popular female name, Olivia, was used 25 times. Other popular names for girls were Violet, Charlotte, Ella and Sophia.
The most popular names tend to stay the same over the years. There are a few new ones gaining popularity, such as Bennett. There has also been a trend for longtime favorites such as Violet and Charlotte to return.
In 2022, Oliver was the most popular baby name in the province, with Olivia topping the list in 2021. Nova Scotia began officially registering births on August 1, 1864, and the most popular names that year were Mary and John.
As of Dec. 28, 5,922 births have been registered in Nova Scotia in 2023.
