Canada raises fees for status rehabilitation

The changes will affect those who have been banned from entering Canada.

The Department of Immigration has announced that fees for foreign nationals applying to reinstate their status or return to Canada after being barred will increase December 1, 2023.

Fees are governed by the Service Fees Act and have been updated annually in line with inflation since 2018.

There are various reasons why Canada may refuse entry or revoke your status: for example, for security or medical reasons.

If you are banned from entering Canada, you will not be able to enter the country. If you have a valid reason to travel that is justified under the circumstances, you may be able to get a temporary residence permit.

If you have committed or been convicted of a crime, you have a number of options to overcome your criminal ban. Depending on the crime, how long ago it happened, and how you have behaved since then, you may still be allowed to come to Canada if you meet one of the following conditions:

  • convince an immigration officer that you meet the legal terms to be deemed rehabilitated;
  • applied for rehabilitation and were approved;
  • were granted a record suspension;
  • have a temporary residence permit.

The Canada Border Services Agency protects the borders from those who may pose a danger to the country. Therefore, they have the right to refuse entry to a foreign national if they are considered dangerous and suspected of being capable of committing a crime while in Canada.
