Saskatchewan will financially support low-income working families

The province is creating a special program to stimulate employment.

The Saskatchewan government has developed a program to help low-income working families. It will provide a financial allowance, additional health benefits, transportation to work and housing support.

Saskatchewan's Employment Incentive program will be available to parents who received social assistance prior to employment. Working parents with a monthly income of CA$ 500 are now eligible for a monthly benefit of CA$ 400, CA$ 500 or CA$ 600 depending on the number of children.

"Paying for the costs associated with being at work, like transportation and child care, can be difficult for families — especially single parents," said Secretary of Human Services Gene Makowsky. "This new program supports families to manage those extra pressures so they are better off working rather than on other income assistance programs."

Saskatchewan's Employment Incentive will replace the employment supplement and child care subsidy. Social services will help people in the province with transition to the new program over the next year.
