Canada supports Israel
Officials have strongly criticized the Hamas terror attack.
On the morning of October 7, Israel was subjected to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. At the same time, armed Hamas units infiltrated the territory, and as a result, various sources say about 250 dead and about 1,500 wounded on the Israeli side. It is also reported that at least 35 people have been taken hostage by the militants — videos of torture and murder are being circulated by the attacking party.
At the same time, the Palestinian side claims that 198 people have been killed and 1,610 injured by Israeli airstrikes as a result of the counter-terrorist operation "Iron Swords" declared in response. Both Israel and Palestine call it a war.
The world community condemns the attack on Israel: the UN website published a statement on behalf of the organization's Secretary General António Guterres. And the UN Security Council announced an emergency meeting.
In Canada, officials expressed support for Israel despite Saturday afternoon. Justin Trudeau wrote on social media:
"Canada strongly condemns the current terrorist attacks against Israel. These acts of violence are completely unacceptable. We stand with Israel and fully support its right to defend itself. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this. Civilian life must be protected."
The Prime Minister was echoed by Foreign Minister Melanie Joly:
"Canada unequivocally condemns the multi-front terror attack against Israeli citizens by Hamas. Canada firmly stands with Israel and its right to defend itself against terror under international law. My heart is with the victims and all those affected by these attacks".
Jewish human rights communities in Canada have expressed gratitude to the authorities for their support. This was reported by the Simon Wiesenthal Friends Center, B'nai Brith Canada and the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs.
Canada has been absolutely unanimous in its response to today's tragedy. Representatives of opposing parties and movements have spoken out in support of Israel. Thus the actions of Hamas were condemned not only by the Liberals, who hold the majority of seats in Parliament, but also by the Conservatives (John Rustad), the Democrats (David Eby), the Bloc Quebecois, BC United (Kevin Falcon) and many others.
For now, Canadian officials are still concerned about the fate of Canadians trapped in the conflict zone. Anyone in danger in Israel, the West Bank or the Gaza Strip, the government asks:
- to limit movement;
- to remain cautious;
- follow the local media to get the latest information;
- find shelter nearby and remain there until it is safe to leave the area;
- to follow the instructions of the local authorities;
- download the app for alerts and detailed information and instructions;
- register with Global Relations Canada;
- contact Canadian representatives.
However, it cannot be said that there are no sympathizers of the other side in Canada at all. In Canada's pro-Palestinian communities, particularly in Montreal and Vancouver's Samidoun, what is happening is celebrated with candy and called a rise of resistance by the Palestinian people.
