How do I learn English?
Our team is sharing its own great tips and tricks.
Good language skills are one of the main conditions for successful immigration to Canada. It's not just about passing the test and getting a high score for the immigrant program. Language skills also play a role in whether you will feel comfortable in Canada, be able to do everyday things easily, interact with people and make friends quickly. If your English is good, you'll feel at home in Canada. In this article, our team shares their English language learning tips and tricks.
We have to disappoint you right away: there will be no magic pills or ways to cheat the system. Behind the knowledge of the language is hard and diligent work, not some unusual method. But this work can be enjoyable, interesting, and more effective.
1. Study regularly
Consistency is very important in language learning. It is best to study every day or at least three times a week. A daily class of 45 minutes will do you more good than a five-hour study marathon at the weekend.
Carve out some time for your daily English lessons. They don't have to be long — as long as you have time to repeat what you've learned and learn new material.
2. Repeat new words and grammar many times
Study your vocabulary not two hours before meeting with your tutor or study group, but a couple of times a day. You don't have to memorize the material. Just reading what you've learned will get you results, too.
3. Put knowledge into practice
Have you learned a new word? Try to make a short story with it. You can discuss the topic you've learned with a neural network like Chat GPT — it can be trained to ask questions to suit your language level and correct your mistakes. Or sign up for platforms where speakers of different languages help each other with learning. Your interlocutor can talk to you in your native language and you answer them in English.
4. Make English a part of your leisure time
Do you have any hobbies or topics that interest you? Try doing it in English. Read fiction in the original, watch home training videos from English-speaking trainers, change the language in the settings of your favorite game. Learn vocabulary from your favorite foreign songs. Combine business with pleasure.
5. Don't spend too much time on the accent
Correct pronunciation and accents will help you a lot, but trying to imitate a British accent is a useless idea. First of all, no one will expect you to speak perfect immediately after immigration. People will know that you are new in the country, and they will be happy to help you get used to you. Many Canadians speak with all sorts of accents — Hindu, Filipino, African, Ukrainian, etc. Everyone is used to the fact that there are many people from different cultures in the country, and they speak in different ways. You can listen to the speech of the current Minister of Transport — his colorful accent gives away that he is from India.

Second, in the language environment your speech will quickly change on its own. If in your home country you can spend years trying to imitate some pronunciation, after immigration you will master it in a couple of months. It is better to focus on expanding your vocabulary, you will need it more.
6. Create a language environment for yourself at home
Surround yourself with English. Search for information in it on search engines, read news sites and social networks, watch content from Canadian bloggers, and listen to local podcasts. This will help you improve your reading, writing, and listening skills evenly.
7. Choose methods that you personally like
There are now a huge number of different techniques and methods of learning English. Don't scramble between them trying to figure out which one to choose. Choose the ones that seem most interesting to you. Any diet that works for you and any sport you enjoy doing will work just like weight loss. All methods will work, except for the most absurd. We do not recommend listening to audio recordings in English, while you sleep — and do not remember anything, and do not get enough sleep. But with the rest of the techniques feel free to experiment, choosing the one that appeals to you personally.
If you are looking for an inexpensive way to learn English from the comfort of your own home, we recommend that you try distance group courses at ILAC. There you will be able to study on a convenient schedule with native speakers from Canada. It usually costs about $5 CAD, which is very affordable.
If you have more money and time, you can attend local ILAC courses in Canada itself. They, too, are very affordable — from $240 CAD per week. The school offers accommodation in a dormitory or Canadian families, as well as meals. For this you must obtain a study visa, which is almost never rejected. Also, you can learn some in-demand profession at the same time. For example, you can take a Canadian truck driver course. Our project cooperates with several schools that issue such a license. After that you can easily immigrate on a work visa and quickly get a permanent residence permit.
