Vancouver's grand innovation plan
An investment in a Canadian province makes it possible to print human body tissues.
To support B.C.'s boldest and brightest changemakers B.C., the Government of Canada is making strategic investments in 10 local organizations that are catalysts for Canada-made innovation to expand their operations and enter new markets.
International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan has announced investments in 10 Vancouver-based organizations that can stimulate B.C.'s economy and create jobs. He also serves as Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan) that deals with topical issues in the province.
Part of the funds will go to Aspect’s technology platform that generates 3D bioprinted human tissues to restore or replace the function of damaged organs. Also, Aspect is using their technology to create insulin-producing pancreatic tissues to treat type 1 diabetes. PacifiCan funding will help the company expand its global network of partners and scale-up its manufacturing systems. Not only will this help to increase Aspect Biosystem’s productivity, it will also support its goal of developing cures for currently incurable diseases.
The B.C. government expects this investment to create more than 500 new jobs and increase sales worldwide by more than CAD 400 million.
