Alberta welcomes immigrants
The government will allocate even more funds to support new residents of the province.
Minister of Immigration Rajan Sawhney said that in the next three years, Alberta will welcome more immigrants — it is a positive impact on the province's economy.
She said that the Alberta government will need to help newcomers succeed. To do that, the province's 2023 budget includes funding of settlement services. Settlement agencies help people get settled in the country by providing translation services, free language classes, assistance in employment, and overall information about daily life in the province.
Settlement agencies can apply for a special government program called the Alberta Settlement and Integration Program — as long as they meet the program's criteria. The Alberta government has allocated CAD 18,9 million to expand this program, so even more immigrants can now get help with integration; that's more than 14,000 people a year.
In addition, the program will be supported by the federal government — Alberta will receive an additional CAD 4,9 million over the next three years.
