Canada Great Depression era census to be published
Historical data gives an idea of the more than 10 million people living in Canada in 1931.
Would you like to know if any of your ancestors are Canadians? What if you are entitled to some inheritance or a million dollars from a rich relative you've never heard of?
Almost 100 years ago — in 1931 — the Canada Census was held. Library and Archives Canada digitized more than 234,000 pages of those documents. On June 1, 2023, Canadians will have an access to the digitized results choosing geographic area and sub-area on a special website.
"Library and Archives Canada is the federal government department responsible for the collection and preservation of the country's documentary heritage, texts, images and other documents relating to Canadian history, culture and politics," says librarian and archivist Leslie Weir.
If you want to compile your family tree, first study the results of the census. You may make new family connections. Who knows if your distant relative might play a key role in your immigration to Canada? Many provincial immigration programs give extra points for family ties.
