Foreign nationals with a visitor visa will be able to apply for a work permit in Canada until 2025

Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada Sean Fraser said so on his Twitter page.

"If you’re already in Canada as a visitor and received a valid job offer, we are extending your ability to apply for or extend a work permit in Canada by another 2 years as of today.," Fraser wrote.

This is great news for visitor visa holders!

Confirmation of this can be found on the official website of the Government of Canada.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) did extend a temporary set of measures allowing visitor visa holders to seek and extend employment. This temporary set of measures was put into practice during the pandemic to fill the country's labour shortage.

Normally, foreigners with a visitor visa cannot apply for a work permit in Canada.

According to an IRCC press release, foreigners who are visiting Canada and have received a genuine offer of employment can apply for and receive a work permit without leaving the country.

Under this set of measures, guest visa holders who had a work permit in the previous 12 months can also get a temporary work permit to start working for a new employer.

Thus, these temporary measures have been extended until February 28, 2025. This is to give Canadian firms another chance, as many of them are still experiencing labor shortages.
