How to get a free iPhone in Canada
In November I received 4 new iPhones, all of which for free. I will give away one of them and give it to you personally.
I want to tell you about mobile communication in Canada, its weaknesses, and its strengths. I am sure that for many people the information will be shocking.
When my family and I lived in Ukraine and then in Poland, my sons, who attended elementary school, had their own phones with SIM cards. It costs pennies there, but when we came to Canada in 2016, we only bought phone numbers for me and my wife. The reason is simple, communication here is very expensive.
I was paying over $140 CAD a month for two numbers along with taxes! This included unlimited calls and text messages within Canada and only 6 GB of mobile data. When we got a bit on our feet, we were able to purchase numbers for our older sons. For 4 numbers in November 2022, I paid just under $200 CAD.
Mobile operators
Let me tell you right away about the peculiarities of mobile operators in Canada. There are four main ones: Rogers, Bell, Telus, and Freedom. 90% of Canadians use their services. You can switch from one operator to another while keeping your mobile number. That's important, I'll get back to that.
Another feature is a lot of virtual operators. When we first arrived in Canada, on the second day we went to a mall in Montreal, and there were different mobile companies. We had to choose one so that we had the Internet and could use Google maps because in the new country it was not clear where to go at all without them.
After walking around the mall, I stopped at Fido. Fido is owned by Rogers and uses the same equipment. I don't understand why I should use Rogers when Fido is much cheaper. Perhaps they have different positioning: for business and private customers. Fido is cool, and they also use a doggie in their website design.
When we applied for mobile numbers, we didn't yet have PR cards and credit cards, only tax numbers. I remember that we were also offered a 3-month free subscription to some music service, and I then called to cancel it.
In general, once everything was arranged in 2016 at Fido and we continue to use it. The coverage is good, there are no complaints. Sometimes you have to pay $50 CAD per month extra for excess traffic. So you have to keep an eye on it. The disadvantages are that for some reason you can't find out how many gigabytes are left via SMS. When we travel to the U.S., roaming automatically switches on, and it costs $12 CAD a day. It's not cheap, but it's comfortable.
Free iPhone
Let's get to the interesting part — how did I get these 4 free iPhones, one of which I'm going to give away. It's very simple — the operators are very interested in you using their services, so they try to move you to a 2-year contract so that you don't leave them.
On Black Friday, I opened FIDO's website and saw an interesting promotion: they were offering iPhones for $0 a month when you sign a 2-year contract. In doing so, they promised 20 GB of mobile data — a lot for Canada. The package costs $45 CAD per month excluding taxes.
I opened my personal account and saw that I only had 10 GB of traffic and that I was paying $50 CAD for it. So I decided to take advantage of the offer. I'm loyal to my current operator, so I just changed my package and not only did I get a free phone, but I also started paying $5 CAD less per month!
And since we have 4 phones in my family, I switched plans for everyone. Before that, I was paying about $5 CAD less for the kids, but they only had a few gigabytes of the Internet. While they're getting to school and home on the school bus, they're consuming traffic on TikTok and stuff. The result is the same as before, I'll be paying about $200 CAD a month for phone service, but I got 4 new iPhones.
This is not the latest model, but I think each one costs about $500 CAD. If you need a newer phone, you can get it in installments, in addition, you have to pay for mobile service.
