Tenants can already get $500 from the government. Acceptance of applications has begun

The government promised to compensate Canadians for part of their rent to support low-income families.

Last month, Canadian authorities offered to help residents with $500 CAD compensation for those who rent their homes. But only low-income citizens can apply after presenting appropriate documents.

Who is eligible for compensation?

Families whose income is less than $35,000 CAD a year and who spend at least 30% of their income on rent are eligible for the payment. For single tenants, the minimum income is $20,000 CAD.

To receive a payment of $500 CAD to cover the rent, applicants must provide:

  • documentation of the payment of income tax for the year 2021;
  • certificates of monthly income;
  • proof of permanent residence in Canada.

If applicants have moved within the last year, they will also be asked to indicate how many months they spent in certain places.

How do I apply?

Applications will be accepted from December 12, 2022, to March 31, 2023. To receive the benefit, you must register with the Canada Revenue Agency under "My Account" and use the direct online form. The application must include:
