Canada's top 10 best employers

Canada

What Canadian companies should you consider to get a high wage and good benefits?

You probably know that there is a constant shortage of workers in Canada. Many companies try to attract new employees and create conditions for them to stay. But, of course, there are undisputed leaders among employers who are considered better than others.

Forbes compiled its annual list of Canada's best employers in conjunction with Statista, which surveyed more than 10,000 Canadians from a variety of companies with 500 or more employees. There are 300 organizations on the list, but let's look at the top 10.

Best companies

Tenth place is the Canadian Mental Health Association. It is the largest public organization in Canada dedicated to supporting the mental health of the population. The association is based in Toronto and now has 7,000 employees and another 11,000 volunteers. So if you've been wondering about volunteering in Canada, this is a good option. What's more interesting is that the Association offers a hybrid work format. It means you don't have to be in the office every day, but only a couple of times a week. It may not be for all jobs, but it's definitely a plus.

Ninth place is Health Canada, headquartered in the capital city of Ottawa. More than 11,000 employees work there, and there are jobs for many professionals with experience not only in medicine but also in office occupations. Jobs are offered all over Canada. There's one more benefit here for newcomers. For immigrants who want to get into government jobs — not only in Health Canada — there's a special program that allows them to do that. We interviewed a woman who got a job in the government this way, and she told us how the program works.

Eighth place is held by Sheridan College, which has three campuses in different Ontario cities. There are more than 140 educational programs, more than 40,000 students, and 3,500 employees. There are also a lot of job openings at the college right now, and they're found in different cities — not just the ones where the campuses are located. And it's not the only institution, by the way, that made it into the top 10 employers.

Just after Sheridan College is the University of Victoria, which is in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. There are more than 5,000 employees and 22,000 students. The University of Victoria boasts top spots in various rankings, such as being named the best university in Canada for preparing students for careers in 2021. Jobs at the university are plentiful.

Sixth place is Microsoft. It has a very wide range of areas: software development, cloud services, artificial intelligence, production of gadgets, and so on. In general, everything for IT specialists. Microsoft in Canada employs 3,700 people and offers vacancies in Vancouver.

The next company is Purolator, which is in transportation and logistics, mostly shipping across Canada and overseas. There are 13,000 employees there, and that's almost the highest number in the rankings. The company has a huge number of jobs in different fields and different cities in Canada.

The fourth place is occupied by the Regional Municipality of York, which, as the name implies, is located in York, a suburb of Toronto. It employs 5,000 people in all kinds of fields, and there are a lot of jobs: permanent, temporary, full-time, part-time — in general, to suit every taste.

The next company is very small in comparison with others, with only about 800 employees. It's the Canada School of Public Service in Ottawa. This is a Canadian government institution where officials improve their qualifications and take various trainings.

Second place is the University of New Brunswick. It has two campuses, in the provincial capital of Fredericton and in St. John. It is, by the way, the first organization in the top 10 that is not located in such popular regions as Ontario and British Columbia. New Brunswick has its advantages, too, at least a lower cost of living. The university has more than 70 programs of study, 3,000 employees, and quite a lot of open positions.

And the first place is the Hydro-Quebec company, which supplies electricity and owns hydroelectric power plants. The company is located in Montreal, and it is the largest organization by the number of employees, 20,000 people. There are a lot of jobs there too, in different cities in Quebec. But there is one disadvantage — they are published in French, and you probably need to know French to get a job, as, in general, to live in the province of Quebec.

Employment in Canada

Surely many people want to get a job at some Microsoft. But if you haven't immigrated to Canada yet, it won't be easy to get a job at any company. So you should have this list for the future so that you know where to aim for but still consider all the jobs first.

Usually, to find a job in Canada, job seekers from abroad have to send their CVs hundreds and thousands of times, and if your CV is not in the Canadian format, the chances of getting a job are almost nil. So, you have to prepare and send out a good CV many times and you have to change your CV for each job opening. Nevertheless, it is possible to find a job, and we have evidence for this.

Now one of the Canadian provinces is launching an immigration program that has a list of employers who are willing to hire foreigners. This program has other advantages because employers have to help candidates with English, skills enhancement, and education.

When you move to Canada, gain Canadian work experience, and understand how the Canadian labour market works, you will have a much better chance of getting a top job. Another option is to choose an immigration program that does not require a job offer, move to Canada, and look for a job inside the country.
