Resumption of selections for all federal programs, sanctions against Russia and other news

We tell you about the main events from July 4 to 10.

International Relations

On July 8, Canada declared Patriarch Kirill, Roskomnadzor, Channel One, Rossiya 1 and Rossiya 24, and several other media outlets agents of Russian disinformation. Canadians are prohibited from funding these organizations or providing goods and services to them. Canada has also banned the import of Russian gold into its territory. In the near future, sanctions will be imposed on the import and export of land and pipeline transport, metals, transport, computer, electronic and electrical equipment.

But so far the sanctions are only going to be imposed, and after they are imposed, Canadian companies will have 60 days to terminate the agreements and find partners from other countries. Before that, Canada is going to return the turbine for Nord Stream 1, which was under repair in Montreal.

The Nord Stream 1 pipeline brings gas to Germany, and without the turbine, Russia can only supply half of its normal volume. Russia conditioned the return of the turbine on July 11. On Friday, Germany began rationing hot water, closing swimming pools and dimming street lights. Canada promised that it would hand over the turbine to Germany. The Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada are outraged, they consider it a betrayal and the sanctions imposed on July 8 a mockery.

Canada resumes the work of visa center in Lviv. It will open on July 13, it will only be possible to submit biometric data. Those who need a visa pasted into a passport will have to send their passports to other countries. Within Ukraine you can only get a single-entry travel document, valid for six months. The day after the news was published, all the days until the end of November were already booked. It is still unknown when the second visa center in Kiev will resume its work.

Difficulties with flights, communication and Internet

The problems at Canadian airports continue. Canada's largest airline has ranked first among the world's airlines in terms of flight delays. 65% of planes didn't leave on time. The company has announced that it will no longer take animals into the luggage compartment, at least until it can guarantee that the flight will not be delayed and the luggage will not be lost. The restriction will be in effect until September 12. Those who have already bought a seat for a pet will not be affected. Other airlines are not going to give up profits yet, although there have been cases of lost pets.

Canadians are not only dissatisfied with flight delays and lost luggage. Document checks are very slow. The media recently covered the scandal of a woman whose curls were searched three times in June at airports already after going through the scanner.

And on Friday, the application where everyone arriving in Canada was required to enter their vaccination status stopped working. In order to legally leave customs, people had to print out vaccination certificates right at the airports and fill out the questionnaires all over again, already on paper.

The culprit was one of the largest Internet providers in Canada. On Friday morning, millions of Canadian users lost their Internet and mobile communications. Payment terminals, apps for ordering food and cabs, and terminals for paying for parking stopped working. Many people could not call emergency services, although Canadian law requires the provider to make this possible in all conditions. The outage lasted 15 hours. By Saturday, the problem had been resolved, but the Canadian government is going to take measures to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Immigration shenanigans

July 5 held a screening by British Columbia. The province needed 100 technicians, 21 early childhood educators, seven health professionals, less than five veterinarians, animal health technologists and veterinary technicians. In total, the province invited 133 people in this drawing.

The Province of Saskatchewan held two consecutive selections. On July 6, a record number of invitations were drawn: 682 people could apply for a nomination from the province and receive 600 extra points. Among them, 5 candidates from Ukraine, the passing score for which was less. The rest were chosen by profession — this time the province needed different specialists, from managers to construction estimators.

On July 7, Saskatchewan held a raffle for entrepreneurs. Sixty-four people received invitations.

On July 6, 2022, Canada's first Department of Immigration draw for participants in all federal immigration programs took place this year. 1,500 people can become permanent residents of Canada. They were chosen from applicants who created a profile in the system no earlier than November 13, 2021. Very few people were invited in comparison with previous draws: before the pandemic, they usually selected at least 3,000 candidates twice a month.

The passing score in this selection was unusually high — 557. It is impossible to score that many points without a nomination from the province or Canadian work experience and education. The bad news for those who do not have it: several thousand more people who scored 500 points or more are waiting for their turn in the system.
