Saskatchewan will pay rent subsidies

People with low incomes can apply and get help from the province.

Starting June 1, 2022, the Saskatchewan government expanded the renter subsidy program. Now everyone who spends 35% or more of their income on rent will be eligible.

The amount of the allowance will depend on the number of people in the household and the ratio of their income to rent costs. For example, a single person or couple with a child/dependant spending exactly 35% of their income on housing will receive $225 CAD per month. A single person or couple with two or more children/dependents, spending more than 45% of their income, would receive $325 CAD per month.

Given rent prices in Saskatchewan, this is quite a tangible help. In Toronto in early 2020, immigrants were paid housing allowance, but so little in the face of rents that people became disillusioned with Canada.

Between 2022 and 2023, Saskatchewan residents will receive up to $11.5 million CAD. So far, this program is promised to be open-ended, unlike a similar program in Alberta.
