The square in front of the Russian consulate in Toronto was officially named after Ukraine

Now it's Free Ukraine Square.

Anti-war rallies were regularly held in front of the Russian consulate at 60 St. Clair Avenue. Strictly speaking, technically there is no square there, it is a piece of street in front of the embassy.

But as recently as three weeks ago, on March 9, Mayor John Thorpe and other activists were discussing on Twitter the idea of opening a Free Ukraine Square in front of the Russian consulate. Before that, MP Charlie Angus proposed renaming a street in Ottawa, where the Russian embassy is located, into Zelensky Boulevard.

On March 20, 2022, yellow and blue signs were placed on the square and a solemn meeting was held. Representatives of the Congress of Ukrainians of Canada came.

So far, the name is unofficially assigned, it is not marked on Google maps, and it is unknown whether the new city square will be included in the official registers. But the activists intend to obtain permission from the city authorities to install more signs with the Free Ukraine inscription at this location.
