Ontario lacks qualified electricians

About 8% of job openings in Ontario last year were in the construction sector. That percentage will increase in the coming years.

The province of Ontario has already two targeted immigration selections this year, including electricians and industrial electricians. But the shortage of personnel in this industry is still high.

On March 15, 2022, the Ontario government announced an investment of more than $13 million CAD to train electricians. More than 2,500 people will be trained in the new profession.

In addition to training newcomers, some organizations that participate in the program will open courses.Advanced training in electric vehicles and chargers for them, where they invite working electricians. And the Hamilton chapter of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers will train welders, who are also in short supply.

The average hourly wage for construction electricians in Ontario in 2021 was $34.32 CAD, industrial electricians $36.12 CAD, electrical and cable workers $38.90 CAD, and power system electricians $47.21 CAD. To learn more about working as an electrician in Canada, see separate article.
