Immigration Results 2021: Has the Plan been Achieved?
This has been a historic year in Canadian immigration.
On December 23, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced Canada's immigration results for 2021. The country managed to meet the target and admit 401,000 new permanent residents! This is an all-time record in Canadian history. Previously, Canada only managed to pass the 400,000 immigrant threshold in 1867.
"Last year we set an ambitious goal. Today we have achieved it," commented Fraser. — Canada is built on immigration, and we will continue to bring in the new residents that Canada needs to succeed."
For the Ministry of Immigration, it is particularly significant that the plan was implemented in the face of a pandemic that has significantly hampered the admission of new residents in 2020. Officials note that the goal was largely achieved by granting permanent residency to temporary residents who were already in Canada on a work or student visa, as well as introducing technology into the immigration system and processing applications in an online format. In addition, Canada continued to accept refugees.
The Department of Immigration emphasizes that immigration boosts Canada's economy and supports an aging indigenous population. Business, employment and economic experts also agree that immigration creates jobs, spurs innovation and helps address labour shortages.
Immigration accounts for almost 100% of Canada's labour force growth. About 75% of Canada's population growth comes from immigration. By 2036, immigrants are projected to account for up to 30% of Canada's population.
The country has already announced immigration plans for 2022.
