Canadian takes gold at Tokyo Olympics

This is not the first gold medal to go to Canada.

Canadian Olympian Andre De Grasse celebrates his victory in the men's 200m today. The 26-year-old sprinter from Markham, Ontario, covered the distance in 19.62 seconds.

The gold medal is the only one De Grasse has yet to win in his collection. He won bronze in the 100m this week, previously winning silver and two bronzes at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and took one silver and three bronze medals at the 2015 and 2019 World Championships.

"I'm so proud of myself," De Grasse admitted. — Of course, I have high expectations for myself. But I'm only doing it for my family, for my children.

The Tokyo Olympics take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021. As of today, Canada has 4 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals in its arsenal. The country is 15th in the overall medal standings.

In addition to De Grasse, gold medalists included Margaret McNeil, who won the 100m butterfly, weightlifter Maude Sharron and the women's rowing eight.
