Travellers who have received a double dose of the vaccine will be able to visit the country as early as early September, but subject to conditions.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau plans to open the border with Canada to fully vaccinated Americans by mid-August. As for all other foreigners, they will not be allowed to visit Canada for tourism purposes until September. However, as Trudeau noted, this will only be possible if the current positive vaccination and health trends continue.

The government is expected to share more details on these plans early next week.

The Canadian government banned many travelers from entering the country, including tourists, back in March 2020. Trudeau's insistence on maintaining travel restrictions between the U.S. and Canada has drawn criticism from U.S. business leaders and lawmakers, but according to Canadians themselves, this decision by the prime minister has found support in their country.

"We are following a phased plan to come out of the quarantine, we remain cautious and we will proceed gradually," the prime minister told reporters Wednesday during his speech at a wind turbine plant in Gaspé, Quebec.

New polling data released by the Angus Reid Institute shows that Canadians generally approve of their leader's cautious approach to opening the borders. 69% of respondents said they want the travel ban to remain in place until 75% of Canadians are fully vaccinated. About half of those surveyed said the prime minister is doing a good job of getting the country out of the pandemic.

A recent similar survey by Nanos Research Group, conducted for Bloomberg News, found that 54% of respondents said they were still wary of seeing tourists from the US. Approximately 70% of respondents said the same about non-U.S. travelers.
