Canada will encourage immigration to a rural area
The city, a member of the Rural and Northern Immigration Program, was selected for federal investment to attract people from abroad.
Immigration is one of Canada's priority goals. The country plans to welcome more than one million new immigrants between 2021 and 2023. The government also aims to sustain the economy and create good-paying jobs in small municipalities that have been hit by the pandemic.
Patti Hajdu and Marcus Poulowski, who are Members of Parliament for the municipality of Thunder Bay, Ontario, have announced that the federal government will invest over $1 million CAD to develop six strategic initiatives for the city. These include tourism development, accelerated growth and business development, and attracting professionals from overseas to fill a shortage of skilled workers. Funding is provided through the Northern Ontario Development Program and should help the area achieve economic prosperity.
"Our government's focus on economic diversification and immigration will help the economy recover quickly and create good jobs for families across Thunder Bay," said Patti Haidu.
Marcus Polewski said that the arrival of new immigrants to the region, among other things, will help unlock the social and economic potential of the region.
Thunder Bay is a small municipality on Ontario's southern border and is one of the towns participating in the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, which aims to attract foreign workers to under-populated, labour-constrained areas.
