Best Canadian cities to work in

Mediacorp Canada, which publishes the top 100 best Canadian employers every year, has chosen the cities that are best for job hunting. So, who came out on top?

Edmonton, Alberta.

Edmonton has a lot to offer. Firstly, it has developed a community mental health and wellness strategy, and it has launched a new program where working people can receive awards for various professional achievements.

Edmonton is also considered one of the best cities for young people. To help students find employment, the city holds an annual student conference where young professionals can demonstrate their skills to employers. Also the city administration attracts high school students every year to learn different professions. The children can work in summer and have part-time jobs during the school year.

Finally, Edmonton supports diversity in the workplace. Indigenous employment is particularly taken care of: there is a summer program for high school and college students where they can get paid work experience. It also promotes gender equality in the workplace.

Ottawa, Ontario

The capital supports the workplace wellbeing and productivity programme and holds events focusing on mental health, stress and financial wellbeing.

Employees working in Ottawa have a wealth of opportunities for training and development, ranging from simple courses and internships to interesting ways such as short-term assignments beyond the employee's duties and temporary transfers to another position or even another company. Like Edmonton, employee achievements are rewarded here in a wide variety of areas. June is considered employee recognition month.

Among other things, Ottawa is also recognized as one of the best cities in terms of diversity in the workplace. The city recently established the Anti-Racism Secretariat to ensure equal opportunities for all. Ottawa is also committed to eliminating prejudice against job applicants at all stages of employment.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver has earned the title of top city for a reason, too. The local government supports the Fit City program, which encourages employees to lead healthy and active lifestyles through, among other things, an incentive system.

Vancouver has also adopted a broad, long-term strategy to address issues affecting women's employment. There are plans to increase the number of women in the city's senior leadership team and in professions where they are scarce. There are also mentoring programs for newly arrived immigrants.

By the way, Vancouver became one of the greenest cities in Canada in 2020.

Surrey, British Columbia

Another top city for job candidates, including young people. Surrey helps students gain work experience through various employment programmes and there are summer jobs at museums, camps and amusement parks for school pupils.

The city administration supports enterprises that create favourable working conditions for people with disabilities, and together with the companies holds job fairs. The city also has many sports programmes adapted for people with disabilities, and since 2018 there has been a pilot programme to help indigenous people, refugees, youth and elderly people get jobs.

And finally, Surrey could very well compete with Vancouver for its eco-initiatives, because it too received a nomination as one of the greenest cities in 2020.
