Fanshawe College: employment prospects after graduation
Why are you sure to find a job when you graduate from Fanshawe College? And what are the most promising career fields?
We have been in the business of helping students get into Canadian post-secondary institutions for many years. During this time, we have helped hundreds of students and met dozens of reliable partners. One of them is Fanshawe College. We recently visited this college's job placement webinnar and want to share the highlights.
Fanshawe College
Fanshawe College is one of the largest colleges in Canada, with approximately 30,000 students enrolled in full-time programs. The college has a history of more than 60 years and has played a significant role in the development of higher education in the province of Ontario. Over the years, the college has remained a leader in higher education by actively adapting to the latest trends. Fanshawe College's main campus is located in London. The city is known for its cultural diversity, attracting immigrants (22% of London's population is immigrant) and offering a high quality of life comparable to Toronto at a lower cost than metropolitan areas.
While London is a fairly compact city (the average London commute is 22 minutes), it has everything you need for a comfortable life:
- affordable housing;
- excellent conditions for families with children;
- safety;
- cultural diversity;
- pleasant climate
- a wonderful lifestyle;
- connectivity to many other population centers (only 2 hours by car separate London from Toronto and the same from Detroit in the USA).
London is a student-oriented city. Students from abroad feel "at home" here, as one in six of the city's residents is a student.
Many major Canadian and international companies have offices in London: Toyota, 3M, General Dynamics and others. The city has a developed and sustainable economy, with many industries operating. London is actively developing, welcoming new residents. Therefore, almost everyone will be able to find a job here.

Employment prospects for Fanshawe graduates was the focus of a recent college webinar. The webinar was hosted by Robert Collins of the London Economic Development Corporation, a company that aims to attract and develop businesses in London so that the city can grow and prosper. Collins talked about promising sectors of the economy where Fanshawe College graduates can find jobs after graduation.
Working in the agri-food sector
Around 7,000 Londoners work for over 90 companies in the agri-food sector, including:
- Maple Leaf;
- Nestle;
- McCormick;
- Nuts For Cheese;
- Labatt.
The city and its outskirts are full of farms, London can rightly be called the farm capital of Canada. Everything imaginable is produced here: craft beer, meat products, chicken, pizzas, cheeses, desserts, spices and much more.
Advanced manufacturing
There are more than 500 companies in London and its suburbs, employing 34,300 people. There are manufacturing facilities for car parts, windows, doors, aircraft and more. London is home to major Canadian and international companies:
- Starlim;
- 3M;
- Hyundai;
- Diamond Aircraft;
- JMP Engineering;
- General Dynamics.
Volkswagen will soon open its business in the region.
More than 6,500 new job openings are expected in advanced manufacturing in the near future.
Digital Media and Technology
More than 16,000 Londoners are employed in 400 digital media and technology companies. And this sector of the economy has limitless potential. First, because Fanshawe has excellent study programs related to this area, and more are expected. Second, London offers graduates of such programs many potential employers. For example, Paystone, which is the fastest growing financial company in Canada, offices of the 5 largest banks in Canada, as well as other companies:
- Voices;
- CARFAX;
- Media Sonar;
- StarTech.com;
- Diebold Nixdorf.
Forecasts show that digital media and technology will provide almost 11,000 new jobs for London in the coming years.
Health and llife sciences
The health and medical sector is represented by more than 60 companies employing 25,000 people. These include:
- Lawson Health Research Institute;
- Alimentiv;
- KGK Science;
- Robarts Research.
Medical science is very developed in the region and Fanshawe College has very good programs in this field. London is not only known for its high level of health care, but also for medical research.
Market analysis shows nearly 9,500 new jobs in the health and medical field through 2031.
Operational services
The operational services sector is also one of the most promising sectors in London. The city, as already mentioned, is actively developing, so all professionals, from those who provide professional services such as administrative, banking or legal services to skilled workers such as construction workers, make a crucial contribution to the city's economy.
The construction sector stands apart in this list. After all, the development of the city will be impossible without the construction of new real estate. And the construction sector will need more than 13,000 new workers in the next decade.
London is also paying attention to the issue of childcare. In the coming years, about 300 new childcare spaces will appear in the city, this industry will need a workforce, and Fanshawe College is ready to train personnel on relevant study programs.
Career Services from Fanshawe College
While London offers tens of thousands of jobs in emerging industries, Fanshawe College actively assists its students in finding employment. Not without reason, the university calls its career services "the No. 1 model among Canadian colleges". This is borne out by statistics. 86.7% of Fanshawe graduates in 2021-22 were able to find employment in Canada. This is the highest rate among Ontario's largest colleges.
Fanshawe helps its students find jobs, whether they are students looking for part-time work or graduates in need of their first full-time job. The college offers:
- assistance with resume writing;
- conversations with career counselors;
- assistance with developing the skills necessary for successful employment;
- meetings with industry representatives;
- career conferences, seminars and webinars;
- job fairs.
Fanshawe College hosts 2 major job fairs each year. Each offers hundreds of job opportunities for students. Over 250 employers and over 2,500 students attend the fairs each year, and they are held in offline and online formats. They offer part-time jobs, full-time graduate jobs, volunteer work, and co-op options.
Much of this is available to students as soon as they enter college, even if they have not yet come to Canada, so that prospective students get the most information about what working in Canada is like as early as possible, since many students plan to come to the country and work part-time. The college even has a separate website with job openings.
Fanshawe offers a unique program called Fanshawe Works. It is designed to help students get a job as soon as they arrive at college.
Another unique Fanshawe offering is LEAP Junction. This is a Fanshawe College center that prepares entrepreneurs. LEAP Junction provides all students or alumni interested in entrepreneurship with business coaching, networking opportunities, entrepreneurial events, webinars, and co-op.
Fanshawe College also provides assistance that is not as extensive, but sometimes very important. For example, the Career Closet service is available to students, allowing students to borrow formal clothes for job interviews if they have not come to Canada without them.
