Nova Scotia calls for winter fishing
The season begins Jan. 1.
The Nova Scotia government reminds us that winter sport fishing is an opportunity to be outdoors and enjoy the many lakes across the province.
This type of recreation and tourism is traditionally important to Nova Scotia, and therefore the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture stocks the lakes with trout from three provincial fish hatcheries to support the season. Freshwater fish species in areas open to winter sport fishing include brook and rainbow trout, white and yellow perch, smallmouth bass and chain pickerel.
What do you need to fish in Canada?
A general fishing license is required for this activity. It is not required only to participate in the annual Winter Sport Fishing Weekend. In 2024, they will be held from February 17 to 19.
Sport fishing licenses can be purchased online at the province's official website. A general fishing license can be purchased until March 1 and will be valid until the end of the season, March 31.
"Whatever your skill level, and whether you fish by yourself or with others, safety should always be top of mind," added Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Kent Smith.
