Canada's top three universities
Based on the two major rankings of higher education institutions in the world.
Three Canadian universities are among the 50 best universities in the world for 2024. They were recognized by two major rankings: QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education by Reuters. Both sources conducted research — one among 1,400 and the other among 1,900 institutions — and shared the results.
University of Toronto
Founded in 1827, today it offers students from all over the world about 700 programs — and that's just undergraduate programs. The University of Toronto has for many years been considered the best in Canada, and in this year's world ranking it was ranked 21st, and by both rankings. QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) gave it a score of 86.3 out of a possible 100.
In some parameters, the University of Toronto showed almost perfect results. Thus, for sustainability of development it received 99.9 points, for academic reputation — 99.7 points, and for the employment of graduates — 96.4 points. Now the University of Toronto includes 12 colleges that have become platforms for research in the humanities and social sciences, life sciences, physical and mathematical sciences, commerce and management, computer science, engineering, kinesiology and physical education, music and architecture. 27% of the university's students are international students.
McGill University
Located in Montreal, Quebec and attracts thousands of international students from over 150 countries each year. McGill University has the most graduate students of any Canadian research university. The university owes its reputation to its 50 research centers and institutes, more than 400 programs and rich history. McGill's percentage of international students is even higher than Toronto's — 29%
There are now about 250,000 McGill graduates worldwide and they are highly valued by employers, as evidenced by their high job placement rates. Medical education at McGill University is considered the best in Canada. Experts from Quacquarelli Symonds gave it 30th place in their rating, awarding 83.7 points. And Reuters ranked it 29th.
University of British Columbia
Recognized internationally for excellence in teaching and research and for its global impact. The University of British Columbia has graduated more than 370,000 professionals from 148 countries. Its alumni include eight Nobel Laureates and 71 Rhodes Scholars, including three prime ministers of Canada.
The share of foreign students here is the highest among the top three universities in Canada — 34%. The University of British Columbia was ranked 34th in the QS ranking, with a score of 81.5. It received the highest marks for sustainable development (99.9), academic reputation (98.2) and the share of international faculty (96.4). In the Times ranking, the University ranked 41st — Reuters experts considered it the second best university in Canada.
About ratings
Looking at the lists in their entirety, 31 Canadian universities were included in each, a significant increase over previous years. It's important to note that the rankings include institutions from a wide variety of provinces, from Alberta to Saskatchewan. And each university has its own strengths, whether it's a strong marine biology department at the University of New Brunswick or perfect gender balance at Concordia.
