More foreigners will be able to get jobs in Canada
The government will compile a list of reliable employers and allow them to hire more applicants from abroad.
Great news for those looking for jobs in Canada. The country continues to try to attract more foreign professionals to deal with the labour shortage. That's why a new pilot program for recognized employers will be launched in September.
In most cases, a Canadian employer must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to hire a foreigner. This document confirms that the company has not been able to find a suitable employee among Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
The new Recognized Employer Pilot (REP) program is just for those employers who have already obtained LMIAs to hire overseas applicants and have complied with all the requirements of the Employee Protection Act.
What does the Recognized Employer Pilot provide? It will help companies obtain an LMIA for up to 36 months, get this document in a simplified manner, and hire additional workers simpler.
This has a direct impact on foreign job seekers. First, the easier it is for an employer to hire a person from abroad, the more willing they are to do so. Secondly, if a company is considered recognized by the government, a job seeker can be assured of good working conditions and respect for their rights in the workplace. The status of a recognized employer will be displayed on the Canadian job search website Job Bank.
To participate in the REP program, employers must meet one requirement: have received a positive LMIA at least 3 times in the past 5 years for the same occupation that has been identified as an in-shortage one.
The Recognized Employer Pilot will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will begin in September 2023 and will be open to agricultural employers. They will be able to hire people for the 2024 season.
In the second phase, which will start in January 2024, applications from companies in other sectors will be accepted. In both phases, the call for applications will end in September 2024.
