Canada lends a helping hand to Hong Kongers

Those from Hong Kong will now find it easier to work and live in Canada.

Canada continues to support Hong Kongers. Since 2021, the country has opened its doors to immigrants from Hong Kong through special immigration programs. The government is working to improve these very programs and trying to make sure they have the opportunity to stay in Canada for as long as possible.

On Tuesday, Paul Chiang, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing, Diversity and Inclusion, announced on behalf of Immigration Minister Sean Fraser that the Canadian work experience stream (B stream) education requirements for Hong Kongers will be eliminated starting August 15, 2023. This means that many more Hong Kong immigrants with work experience in Canada will now be able to apply for permanent resident status because their education will no longer matter. The process of applying for permanent residency is also becoming simpler, as it is no longer necessary to provide proofs of education.

This amendment complements and expands on the February decision to extend and expand open work permits for Hong Kongers and helps many of them move from temporary to permanent resident status. The implementation of these measures will allow those who already have experience working in Canada to stay in the country. This, in turn, will allow skilled Hong Kong people to continue to contribute to Canada's economy.
