Charles III has been waiting for this moment all his life

Being most of his life the Prince of Wales, now he is the King of Great Britain and the Commonwealth of Nations.

The coronation ceremony of Charles III will take place in London as early as this weekend. The son of Elizabeth II, who reigned for 70 years, became King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Commonwealth of Nations September 8, 2022.

Earlier we wrote about Canadians' uncertain feelings about Canada being part of the United Kingdom. According to opinion polls, Maple Leaf Country residents are divided roughly 50/50: some are strongly opposed to still being dependent on the British Crown, while others say it's an essential part of their identity.

Everyone is right in their own way, and since coronation is inevitable, let's check out the procedure. Who is responsible for the ceremony and why it is needed at all in the twenty-first century. The world hasn't seen a coronation of a British monarchs for 70 years, but that certainly will be a massive show – no official event in the world is watched with as much attention as weddings and coronations of British monarchs. Except for the inauguration of the President of the United States maybe.

Buckingham Palace, the headquarters of the British monarchs, has announced events related to the coronation of Charles III. The ceremony will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the principal leader and the ceremonial head of the Anglican Communion worldwide. Traditionally, the ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey in London, where Queen Victoria, Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Charles Darwin are laid to rest.

His Majesty King Charles III will be crowned along with Consort Queen Camilla Parker-Bowles. This title is held by the spouse of the British monarch. Since consorts have no constitutional status or power, no vows will be delivered by Camilla.

Coronation is a public event, all expenses are on government. It must also be a state day off. The people in charge choose the date, and then notify the public.

The principal guest list is prepared by the government. Practically, presidents and other heads of state do not attend the coronation of their British counterparts, sending their family members as official representatives. The coronation, for example, has never been attended by the U.S. presidents. This time, only John Biden's wife Jill will be present.

Coronation is a tribute to a tradition. At the moment of the monarch's death, the heir to the throne becomes the new king or queen. Today, the United Kingdom remains the only European monarchy that is devoted to the tradition of a public coronation.

Charles III is 74 years old. At the time of his coronation he will be the oldest monarch in British history to ascend the throne. He has spent most of his life being the Prince of Wales, known to the world as Prince Charles.

Charles III is a king of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon will attend the ceremony.

The King is dead. Long live the king.
