A new coin series to be minted in Winnipeg
Ordinary coins have reached the silver level.
Since 1976, the Winnipeg branch of the Royal Canadian Mint has produced every single coin that average Canadian uses every day in stores, cafes and cash registers.
The year 2023 marks a special issue of such coins. They will all be made of 99.99% silver. For the first time, the Winnipeg Mint will be producing coins made of this metal.
The coins will vary from two-dollar to five-cent coins and any Canadian's pocket is familiar with them. Each coin will bear a symbol referring to the Winnipeg mint — the letter "W."
The commemorative issue will begin with $2 coins, commonly known as "Toonies," depicting a polar bear. The smallest denomination in the series is 5 cents with a picture of a beaver. Among the other coins, there are classic designs:
- Polar Bear
- The Loon
- Coat of Arms
- Caribou
- Fishing vessel Bluenose
- Beaver
