New immigration pathway and who can be deported - news of the week

What new immigration program has Canada launched, and why are more people facing deportation?

The world is still in turmoil over the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank in the U.S. The Bank of Canada said it is ready to protect private banks if the banking crisis reaches Canada. Bank officials say the bank is prepared for any crisis. But its intervention is unlikely to be needed.

Improvements in Canada

Canadian provinces are improving their healthcare systems. Prince Edward Island has published a 5-year plan to fight cancer. The plan contains specific recommendations and steps on how to change the cancer detection system and give people more skilled care.

British Columbia is investing in 10 local businesses, including a company that 3D bioprints human tissue. This helps repair or replace damaged organs.

Nova Scotia has reduced the administrative burden on doctors, so they can devote more time to patients. In addition, the province doesn't charge licensing fees for physicians who are already licensed in another province.

Government investment

The Canadian government has announced its federal budget plan for 2023. Among the top priorities to which investments will go are the immigration system, the green economy, the dental care program, and financial support for Ukraine.

Canada will also provide CAD 50 million for initiatives to promote and support democracy at home and around the world. More than half of the funds will go to the protection of human rights, indigenous peoples, religious minorities, and LGBTQ+ people.

Moving to Canada

Canada's population grew by one million people in 2022. This is the fastest growth since the 1950s. Immigration played an important role. Last year, Canada welcomed 437,000 immigrants who came for permanent residence. In addition, the country approved 608,000 work permits and 551,000 study permits.

Illegal migrants seeking asylum regularly try to cross the U.S.-Canadian border via the Roxham Road, a road from New York State to the province of Quebec. But increasingly they are being deported back to the States. The reason is the new border rules. Previously only those crossing the border at official points were deported, now it applies to the entire land border. Illegals risk facing arrest, deportation and never obtaining refugee status in Canada. Immigration experts condemn the new rules, saying they will encourage people to take risks and put pressure on first responders.

Canada has announced a new immigration way. The program makes it easier to prove work experience, there are no fees to pay, and applications will be processed in 6 months. Applications will begin to be accepted this summer.

Immigration draws

On March 29, Canada held another record-breaking Express Entry draw. 7,000 people were invited with the lowest passing score in a long time — 481.

On March 30, British Columbia held two draws. 216 invitations were received by candidates with professions in demand: technicians, educators, doctors, and veterinarians. 7 more people were selected among entrepreneurs.

On the same day, the Prince Edward Island round of invitations took place. The region selected 113 people among skilled workers, critical workers, and international graduates.

On March 31, the province of Ontario invited 13 entrepreneurs who want to do business in the region. They are required to have a net worth of 400,000 Canadian dollars and an investment of 200,000 dollars.
