Canadians are ready to pay more taxes to attract doctors
A recent national survey confirms that Canada needs even more health care workers. The Nanos survey.
Hospitals are in dire need of medical workers. And during viral disease, doctors are woefully understaffed in both pediatric and other departments. The shortage of workers is also related to burnout and ongoing disagreements between the provinces and the federal government over funding.
The results of a survey by Nanos, which included more than 1,000 Canadians, show:
- 28% support the idea of investing in the medical field;
- 14% agree that private corporations should be allowed to charge for medical services;
- 58% think the country should hire more doctors, nurses and other medical personnel.
In the survey on priority hiring of health care workers, the highest demand is in Atlantic Canada at nearly 69%, and the lowest is in Ontario at just over 49%.
The majority of those surveyed (almost 60%) said that they would even agree to a tax increase for this purpose. 22% are categorically against such a development.
The results of the study confirmed that in recent months many residents have not been able to seek medical help in time, as well as to receive urgent medical care. 43% were able to do so, and 30% did not.
Among the respondents were people who chose treatment abroad because the wait in Canada was too long.
