The duration of sick leave in Canada is increasing significantly
While planning to emigrate to Canada, most applicants are interested in the level of medicine, its affordability, and the possibility of receiving payments from the state during an illness.
Medicine in Canada is relatively free, and its level is quite high in terms of indicators. All Canadian citizens, including immigrants with permanent resident status and work visas, are eligible for free healthcare. Tourists and students don't have this option.
But everyone in the country must have medical insurance, which covers part of paid medical services.
There was no paid "sick leave" for all employees of private companies.
On December 1, 2022, Minister of Labour Seamus O’Regan Jr. announced that 10 days of sick leave would be paid for all private company employees (immigrants and citizens) who work under federal law.
This draft in the labour code keeps workers safe and ensures that they don't lose their salaries while on sick leaves.
The minister emphasized: "One thing COVID-19 has made obvious is that when you're sick, it's better to stay home. Ten days of paid sick leave means that employees don't have to choose between getting well and getting paid. That's good for workers and their families, and it's good for business."
Bank employees, truckers, couriers, and other employees of private companies will be able to get three paid sick days after 30 days of continuous work, and one day each month, until a maximum of 10 paid sick days, is accumulated.
For example, an employee who works will be able to take three paid sick days from December 31. All unused paid sick days will be carried over to the next year, but no more than 10 days.
Unfortunately, these norms don't apply to provincial workers.
