How actively is Canada accepting refugees?

A new U.N. report on refugee resettlement has surfaced.

The U.N. Refugee Agency has published its annual report on the resettlement of refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons around the world. The report reflects the situation for the year 2021. The total number of refugees in the world in 2021 was 89.3 million, and in 2022, because of the war in Ukraine, the number exceeds 100 million.

According to the U.N., Canada is one of the world leaders in receiving refugees. But compared to other countries, Canada has not received many displaced people. In 2021, 20,400 refugees moved into the country. That's twice as many as in 2020. Most Canadian refugees are from Afghanistan, Syria, and Eritrea.

The leaders in refugee admissions are Turkiye (3.8 million people), Colombia (1.8 million), Uganda and Pakistan (1.5 million each), and Germany (1.3 million).

Nevertheless, Canada has another merit. During the year 2021, the country managed to significantly reduce the backlog of asylum applications. Also, 6,300 people who once came to Canada as refugees were granted Canadian citizenship last year.

U.N. statistics for 2022 are not yet available, but it is already known that from August 2021 to October 2022, Canada received more than 22,000 Afghan refugees. The country also launched a program of simplified entry permits for Ukrainians. This does not grant refugee status but allows them to stay and work in the country for three years and receive financial aid. From March to October 2022, more than 102,000 Ukrainians arrived in Canada, and more than 302,000 visas have already been approved. In total, Canada plans to accept 76,545 refugees in 2022.

There are two ways to obtain asylum in Canada. The first is for those who are outside of Canada and have official refugee status as defined by the UNHCR. In this case, the refugee can be resettled in Canada during the resettlement process, but can also be sent to another country.

The second way is for those who do not have U.N. refugee status and want to apply for asylum in Canada on their own. In this case, they must first obtain any visa to Canada, arrive in the country, and claim refugee status at the point of entry.

Asylum in Canada is not an easy way to immigrate, but a measure for those who are in danger in their home country. In other cases, you should use the usual immigration programs, Canada has more than 120 of them.
